9/13 Mark 2

Jesus is continuing his ministry and calls Levi (Matthew) as a disciple.  I think as his ministry starts growing in come the attacks.  I like how Jesus defines why he is here in this passage.

15While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and “sinners” were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the “sinners” and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?”

17On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

This seems so true even today.  As Christians is it our purpose to hang around with other Christians at church on Sunday and throughout the week?  Or are we called to be doctors to the sinners in this world.

  1. Verses 23-28 stand out to me the most; in my Bible it is titled “Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath.” The Pharisees ask Jesus (more like accuse), why He and His disciples pluck & eat the grain from the field. They considered that work on the Sabbath. They had MANY rules of what can and can’t be done on the Sabbath, when God originally said to rest on the Sabbath. He rested Himself on the Sabbath, and commanded that for our own good, a real blessing! They were so ready to catch those who disobeyed, even the Son Himself!, that what God had intended was forgotten in all the religious stuff.

I like this chapter because Jesus reveals His authority & purpose, illustrating what the new convenant was that He was bringing and how it didn’t THROW AWAY the old, but made it complete.

  2. Great point Rachel. I like that section also. I guess they can’t seem to understand that God can do whatever He wants, whenever He wants.
