11/14 Philippians 1

Paul’s writing in the first chapter gives us the picture of a true Christian.  It would be better for the Christian to die and go be with Jesus.  However it would be better for the church if the Christian were to stay and bear fruit.

21For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.

Paul poses a difficult question for each of us.  “Yet what shall I choose?”  It would be so much better to be in heaven with Jesus.  No pain and suffering.  No sickness or disease.  No hate only love.  Yet here we are wanting to stay on this earth, this place where we are considered aliens.  I wonder if we had to choose between door number 1 (Heaven) and door number 2 (Safe in my Home), what would the choice be?
