What Difference Does Christmas Make? (1 of 4)

December 9th, 2009

Are you ready for Christmas? All the kids say, Yes!, all the adults say, No!. Kids are great at Christmas. They make lists and let you know what they want. I heard of a little boy who had been asking for a watch. Finally his dad said, If you mention it one more time, you’re not getting it! Last night around the dinner table, his dad said, Let’s all share our favorite Scripture. When it came to the little boy, he said, My favorite verse is Mark 13:5: `I’ll say to you what I’ve said already, `Watch.’“.

Are you ready for Christmas? Immediately you’re thinking, I have presents to wrap.  I have presents to buy. Soon the whole world will shutdown and they focus on a single event. The freeways will be empty. Offices will be closed. And the whole world focuses on a single event.

Why is Christmas such a big deal? What difference does it make? How can a baby born 2000 years ago on the other side of the world, slow up traffic on I-76? It’s because it was no ordinary baby. The Bible says, God came to earth. That’s bigger news than when man landed on the moon. God invaded earth.

The Bible says, God loved the world so much that He gave his Son. When Jesus entered the world He entered just like everybody else does. As a baby. Of all the ways God could have chosen to enter the world, why did He choose to come the way we all came?

So He wouldn’t scare us.

Nobody’s afraid of a baby. But He was no ordinary baby. If He had stayed in the crib, we wouldn’t be here today.  He grew up and He taught some things about God because He was God and He died on the cross.  He went from the crib to the cross.  The Bible says, “For unto you is born a Savior.” And He became our Savior.  And that makes a big difference!

Did you know there are over 300 prophecies in the Bible predicting the coming of Jesus? Because Jesus Christ came at Christmas time, He promised three things that deal with the scope of my life:

1. BECAUSE JESUS CHRIST CAME AT CHRISTMAS, MY PAST CAN BE FORGIVEN.

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.  And are justified freely (not guilty) by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:23-24

2. BECAUSE JESUS CHRIST CAME AT CHRISTMAS, MY PRESENT CAN BE MANAGED.

“I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13

“He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all – how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things.” Romans 8:32

3. BECAUSE JESUS CHRIST CAME AT CHRISTMAS, MY FUTURE CAN BE GUARANTEED.

“Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death – that is, the devil – and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.” Hebrews 2:14-15
