11/11 Galatians 4-6

Paul gives us nine characteristics that we should always exhibit if we have the Holy Spirit living within us.

Love
Joy
Peace
Patience
Kindness
Goodness
Faithfulness
Gentleness
Self-Control

22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

Jesus died for us and sent us the Holy Spirit as our guide.  So how many of these do you exhibit each day as you live out life.  Should be all of them right?  Okay, well maybe some of those are not as strong as the others.  That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.  But maybe I should try just a bit harder to let the others surface some times.

11/10 Galatians 1-3

In chapter 3 of Galatians Paul writes that the righteous will live by faith and not by the law, because it is impossible to live by the law and become righteous.  No one can possibly do it.  Except one.

10All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” 11Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, “The righteous will live by faith.” 12The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, “The man who does these things will live by them.” 13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” 14He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

The definition of faith comes from Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” So if we have faith in Jesus, that he died for us to fulfill the law that we could not, then we have been redeemed and are justified before God.  Living by faith sure is difficult sometimes.  We just want to take matters into our own hands.  We want to be absolutely sure we will succeed before we attempt that very risky action, whatever it is.  Got to be sure don’t we.  “Being sure of what we hope for”, almost goes against our grain and “certain of what we do not see”, can be a frightening concept.  Practice living by faith.  It opens so many more possibilities in life.  Never taking a chance, never stepping out in faith certainly must be a boring existence.
